Business travellers may soon be saying goodbye to the traditional paper boarding pass and instead using their mobile phones to board a plane. This new technology will work via a barcode that can be displayed on the phone or other electronic devices, and some airlines have already begun to instigate the transition to the new system. But techno-phobes need not place all their trust in their handset – similar symbology will also be used for those who wish to check in from the comfort of the office and then print off a boarding pass to bring to the airport. The airline industry has set a deadline for the end of 2010 in which to have fully implemented the bar coded boarding passes.
