If the experts are to be believed then it might be wise to spend as long on your appearance as you do on your resume when you go for a new job. According to a University of Sydney study ‘lookism’ is on the rise – where prospective employers may be paying closer attention to your appearance than your actual ability to do the role or your previous experience. Although the study focused on the fashion and jewellery retail sector experts are warning that it’s unlikely to be the only industry that favours looks over ability. The study’s figures revealed that:
- Nearly all retailers selected new employees based on personality.
- 84% of retailers say they relied on those who had the right appearance.
- Only 44 per cent considered applicant’s qualifications.
- Less than 80 per cent took into account previous experience
In customer facing roles it makes sense that employers need to be well groomed and presentable but surely of equal, if not more so, importance is the ability to do the role.
