You've organised the event of the century and everyone has praised your hard work and dedication... but have you remembered to record the actual event for posterity? Finding a photographer can be easy... but finding an excellent photographer can be difficult. You don't want someone who turns up takes a few snaps and then gets stuck into the free food or champagne afterall. We speak to Shane O'Neill, from Oneill Photographics, to find out what you must ask your photographer before you sign a contract:

1) Are they an event specialist?
You need a photographer who is experienced in event photography. This will ensure they understand the way events work and what shots are required. For example, an event photographer will be familiar with how to get back stage, the way events are lit and how to get the best shots.

2) Do they listen and ask questions about your brief?
You need a photographer who not only listens clearly to your brief but asks questions. They should be asking questions such as who are the important guests and when are they arriving and leaving, what image are you trying to portray, what are the most important aspects of the event and how the event will unfold.

3) How do they describe their photographic style?
Before choosing a photographer, determine what type of photos you would like. Are you interested in traditional photography with formal poses? Or do you want more spontaneous shots? Or maybe you need both. You need to ensure that the photographer you choose is able to produce the style of shots you require.

4) Will they deliver your photos on time?
Establish deadlines before the event and ask the photographer if they can guarantee arrival of photos before your deadline. If you need some shots quickly be sure to communicate this with your photographer. Good photographers are busy, so submit your request in advance.

5) Are they flexible and adaptable?
In the events world, changes occur constantly. You need a photographer who is flexible and open to change. They always need to be ready to capture the unexpected and willing to adapt to changes within the event. If you choose a photographer who is experienced in events and has a spontaneous style, they are more likely to be flexible and willing to adapt to last minute changes.
