Email was meant to make our working days easier for everyone but new research reveals Aussie workers are suffering high levels of stress just trying to figure them out. The psychological study revealed that poorly written emails cause high levels of anxiety for employers who struggle to understand their meaning or to reply to them. “An unprofessional email is a message that maybe overly complicated, quite ambiguous, emotionally-driven or just requires clarification,” the provisional psychologist who conducted the research, Rowena Brown, commented. ““Complex and emotionally-driven emails may complicate the message and allow room for misinterpretation. They can also contribute to work-related stress, such as feeling overloaded as well as impacting on job satisfaction and working relationships” she continued. She believes that unprofessional emails can be more stressful than receiving high volumes of emails, so next time you need to write an email to a colleague think before you type.
