Brisbane council’s new public bike hire scheme is targeting commuters and hopefully taken hundreds of cars off the road

As part of the new scheme there will be 150 hire stations around the inner city with up to 2,000 bikes available for people to hire. Brisbane Lord Mayor Campbell Newman has advised that the scheme is aimed squarely at the commuter crowd as opposed to tourists or recreational users. Commenting on the bike hire programme Councillor Newman said: “Ultimately, as with other world CBDs, the Brisbane CBD has to be particularly about the dominance of pedestrians and cyclists.” The council will be hoping that the by promoting active transport they will help to ease the pressure on the city’s roads. But if you’re interested in hiring a bike you have a few months to wait - the first bikes will be available from October.
