You probably already know just how big an impact job stress has on your own life, but have you ever considered the cost to the economy?
A report from VicHealth, carried out by the University of Melbourne’s School of Population Health and Tasmania’s Menzies Research Institute, has revealed that 1.5million workers are estimated to be suffering from depression brought on by excessive job stress – and the cost the Australian businesses is a staggering $8,000 per employee, per year. While that figure alone is alarming it’s even more worrying to learn that $750m per year is wasted because organisations are failing to prevent job stress. Job stress, to a large degree, is preventable – it often stems from the employee feeling they have little control but it can have a knock on effect on business when it comes to productivity, sick leave and employee replacement costs.
