It’s all change for the residents of Samoa – who having gone to bed on Thursday 29th December will wake up on Saturday 31 December. No it’s not because the island’s residents celebrated Christmas too much but because the island is switching time zones! One hunded and twenty years ago Samoa moved east of the dateline as the majority of its trade was with Europe and the US and the move helped to make this smoother. But now Samoa is keen to boost trade with Australia and New Zealand and so it is once again switching time zones to facilitate this. Currently businesses claim that they lose two working days a week due to time differences with its closest trading countries. If you’re currently on holiday in Samoa – don’t worry you won’t have to pay to stay for the day that won’t now officially exist, but fortunately if you’re working in Samoa you’ll still get paid for Friday 30 December even though you never made it in to work!
